Get to Know A Friend Of Mine – Brandon Kinney

Ok, so let’s go back to 2008. I think. I swear I’m going to make this as concise as possible, but I’ve had a few drinks since then.

I was working at KDCD in San Angelo, TX. We had a guy coming through on a radio visit. I hadn’t ever heard of him. But we got along really well from the get go. He told me about some of his song writing credentials to date. Like Lonestar’s “You’re Like Coming Home” and Willy Nelson’s “Ain’t Going Down on Brokeback Mountain” and a new song that not a lot of people were playing yet, Randy Houser was singing it called “Boots On.” But yeah, we got a long.
Brandon and some guy I can’t remember had an evening to kill, so I invited them out to do some drinking and swapping of stories. They were in. I just had to run an errand home first. You see I had gotten a couch delivered to my apartment that day. I say ‘delivered’ like it was a company, but my landlord just found a couch that he thought I would be able to use. I needed to get it inside my apartment. Brandon offered to help. I remember saying “Man I appreciate it, but you don’t have to.” His response was something close to “The quicker we get it done the quicker we can get to the bar.”
So this guy i’d just met, who writes songs for a living was now at my apartment trying to help me get a couch through a very weird entrance to my apartment. The five minute job ended up taking us at least 30 due to the size of the couch. Finally done with my errand we head to the bar. After a few hours I convince Brandon that he should get up on stage, pretty sure it was a Monday night and no one was there, and sing a couple of his songs he’s written. He couldn’t remember the words. The only words I remember saying that night was “more shots.” Brandon has gone on to write a few more songs you might know.
Luke Bryan “Beer in the Headlights”
Craig Campbell “Outta My Head”
Cole Swindell “No Can Left Behind”
Justin Moore “Off The Beaten Path”
Chris Janson “Right In The Middle”

A couple years ago he came back to his hometown of Lamesa, TX right near Lubbock where I was living. He hadn’t been home in a long time. I was invited to his sister’s house for a homecoming party where Brandon sat on the porch and played us some songs and told us some stories. It was one of the coolest nights I’ve ever had. Just reconnecting with an old friend and meeting his family, including his son Woods. Who’s possibly one of the coolest kids I’ve ever met.
Today, seemingly out of nowhere, Keith Urban posted a tweet to Brandon

And for Good Measure, here’s a more recent song of his off of his website

Oh and ladies, who is Brandon also good friends with that you might like? Well a guy I met recently told me that he stays in Brandon’s bunkhouse all the time. That guy?

So I hope you check out Brandon’s music. Chances are you’re heard it before. Save a spot in the bunkhouse for me Brandon. I’ll be there sooner or later!
